What is VISTA?
The AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national program that provides full-time volunteers to community-based organizations and public agencies to create and expand programs that bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Under The Health Trust AmeriCorps VISTA grant, up to 12 members serve with The Health Trust or key partnering organizations, including School Health Clinics of Santa Clara County, Full Circle Farms, and CommUniverCity San Jose. The Health Trust VISTA members dedicate one year of full-time volunteer service to improving the health and wellness of Silicon Valley residents. While volunteering, they receive a small living stipend and an education award.

What is VISTA?
The AmeriCorps VISTA program was created by President Lyndon Johnson’s Economic Act of 1964 as the domestic version of the Peace Corps. It was the first national service program established. Since 1965, more than 140,000 Americans served through VISTA.

The list of VISTA programs that have helped bring people out of poverty is extensive. Members have established health clinics, neighborhood watches, and computer training programs. They have formed many of our nation’s literacy programs, along with Upward Bound, Head Start programs, and adult education initiatives. VISTA service has led to urban renewal programs and neighborhood beautification. Most importantly, programs established by VISTA members continue long after they complete their service.

Today, nearly 6,000 AmeriCorps VISTA members serve throughout the country- working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, increase housing opportunities, bridge the digital divide, and strengthen the capacity of community organizations.

Application and Selection Process
If you are interested in one of our open VISTA positions go to the AmeriCorps website, www.americorps.org and click on the AmeriCorps*VISTA link at the bottom of the page. Follow the link to the “Becoming a Member” section and file an electronic AmeriCorps*VISTA application. Be sure to select and submit The Health Trust program you are interested in applying for. PLEASE NOTE: Your application must be current and The Health Trust requires all references to be submitted through the on-line registration system.
