“The benefit (of a garden) is not just the availability of fresh produce but also it gives the community an opportunity to come together around gardening and growing their own food, working together towards a healthier community and a better future for their kids. Gardens…make the connection between what we eat and how we feel, and how healthy we are.”

-Michelle Obama

Silicon Valley HealthCorps - Community and School Gardens in Silicon Valley

Overview
In an innovative partnership, The Health Trust has joined together with AmeriCorps and 11 local organizations to form the Silicon Valley HealthCorps. The goal of this collaboration is to use gardens, farm to school programs and the work of AmeriCorps members to bring fresh fruits, vegetables and education to residents of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The program seeks to engage the community as active participants in promoting and sustaining community and school gardens, and to provide a coordinated, county-wide approach to expanding garden based learning. The program will also increase access to fresh produce through the development of new healthy food resources such as community and school gardens, farmers markets, and community supported agriculture programs.

The Silicon Valley HealthCorps is now recruiting members for the 2011-2012 program year! The HealthCorps offers both full and part time positions, a living allowance stipend, and a post-service education award. Read more information.

Facts and Statistics
  • In 2007, only 21.4% of American high school students in this county reported eating fruits and vegetables five or more times daily during the past 7 days.
  • There are over 140 major fast food restaurants in Santa Clara County.
  • More than half of the adult population in the Valley is either overweight or obese—this is higher than the national average.
  • Many experts have identified the problem of obesity with the distancing of communities from farms. Children are more familiar with fast and processed food than where and how food is produced.
