“The benefit (of a garden) is not just the availability of fresh produce but also it gives the community an opportunity to come together around gardening and growing their own food, working together towards a healthier community and a better future for their kids. Gardens…make the connection between what we eat and how we feel, and how healthy we are.”

-Michelle Obama

Silicon Valley HealthCorps - Community and School Gardens in Silicon Valley

In an innovative partnership, The Health Trust has joined together with AmeriCorps and nine local organizations to form the Silicon Valley HealthCorps. The goal of this collaboration is to improve community health by providing ongoing garden-based nutrition education to youth in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Facts and Statistics
  • In 2007, only 21.4% of American high school students in this county reported eating fruits and vegetables five or more times daily during the past 7 days.
  • There are over 140 major fast food restaurants in Santa Clara County.
  • More than half of the adult population in the Valley is either overweight or obese—this is higher than the national average.
  • Many experts have identified the problem of obesity with the distancing of communities from farms. Children are more familiar with fast and processed food than where and how food is produced.
