Disparities and Health Series: Documentary Screenings and Discussions

Seven churches to host community events focused on health disparities in Silicon Valley
Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?

A seven-part community forum sponsored by The Health Trust will focus on the disparities that exist in Silicon Valley and throughout the U.S., and how these disparities affect health. The series will be hosted by seven churches and is open to the public and all faith communities.

The forum features segments from the documentary “Unnatural Causes...is inequality making us sick?” followed by a group discussion. The series takes place one Thursday night a month through October at different churches in Los Gatos, Saratoga, Cupertino and San Jose. Each event will include a half-hour segment of the documentary, followed by a guest speaker and group discussion.

The Health Trust's vision of Silicon Valley as the healthiest region in America is supported by three strategic initiatives, including Healthy Communities that works to decrease health disparities. In February, The Health Trust hosted a Healthy Equity Summit attended by 300 community members and featuring keynote speaker Dr. Julie Gerberding, former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Disparities and Health community series is hosted by the Catholic Diocese of San Jose's Deanery 5. It is being held in conjunction with "Step Up Silicon Valley," a campaign launched by Catholic Charities with other community partners to address the issue of poverty in Santa Clara County.
