| New partnership supports healthy food and
healthy teeth for low income families
|
The Second Harvest Food Bank will be
stationing its Produce Mobile outside of the Children's
Dental Center at King and Story Road in East San
Jose. | |
Starting September 2, we'll team up with Second
Harvest Food Bank to help provide fresh produce to families with low
incomes, using Second Harvest’s Produce Mobile, parked in front
of our Children’s
Dental Center in East San Jose.
Staff from our Wellness
Access and Education Program - who usually help families with
low incomes enroll in health insurance - will also help families
determine their eligibility and enroll in food assistance
programs. Staff will also distribute healthy produce—about 10
pounds per person—to eligible individuals and families. Our
Children’s Dental Center, located in the Tropicana Shopping Center,
is an ideal location for this project so families can also learn
more about the children’s oral health services available. “This is
truly a creative and meaningful way to meet more families’ needs,
especially in these tough economic times," says our CEO Frederick
J. Ferrer. “We can’t wait to get started.” Back to top

Silicon
Valley HealthCorps to officially launch on October 2; seeks
Americorps members for community gardens
|
Silicon Valley HealthCorps will be using
the resources and expertise of partners and
AmeriCorps members to bring fresh produce to local
communities. | |
On October 2 nine community organizations will
officially come together to form the Silicon
Valley HealthCorps, launching a major school and community
gardens initiative for Silicon Valley. We are thrilled to be leading
this partnership. Experts, including the Centers for Disease
Control, strongly believe obesity can be prevented, and health can
be improved when we have access not only to fresh fruits and
vegetables but also a better understanding of where healthy food
comes from. The Silicon Valley HealthCorps will use gardens, farm to
school programs and the work of 46 Americorps volunteers to bring
fresh fruits and vegetables and education to residents of Santa
Clara and San Mateo counties. Over the next three years they will
produce and distribute 180,000 pounds of locally grown, organic
produce from new community and school gardens, year-round community
farm stands, and school based “Harvest of the Month” boxes.
The Silicon Valley HealthCorps will kickoff this
groundbreaking work on October 2, 2009 from 10:00-noon
(Location TBD). Members of the public are welcome at the
event, and we are actively recruiting individuals to become
AmeriCorps members for the project.

Back to school season is a time to focus on
health
Children need 60 minutes of physical activity each
day. Yet during the school year, physical education classes are
rarely enough. According to a recent study by the Centers for
Disease Control, less than 4% of elementary schools, 8% of middle
schools, and 2% of high schools provide daily physical education for
the entire school year. Making up the lost hours of exercise during
the school day is critical in the development of a healthy
lifestyle. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers 11 tips to help
you help your child become more physically active: http://www.aap.org/publiced/BR_PhysicalActivity.htm
In addition to daily physical activity, children
need a healthy diet. In 2007, only 21.4% of American high school
students reported eating the recommended five servings of fruits and
vegetables daily during the past seven days. The American Academy of
Pediatrics also offers some great tips for healthy cooking and
eating with kids in this brief audio presentation: http://multimedia.aap.org/mm/mfk/081706.wma.
