On July 29th The Health Trust was joined by
community leaders and elected officials Councilmember Madison Nguyen
and representatives from the office of Assemblymember Joe Coto and
County Supervisor George Shirakawa to celebrate the one year
anniversary of the Children’s
Dental Center, located in the heart of East San Jose. Last year,
The Health Trust partnered with Children's
Dental Group to open the Children's Dental Center focusing on
high quality dental care in a kid-friendly environment. In
Silicon Valley, where more than half of the children from low income
families enter kindergarten with untreated tooth decay, the
Children’s Dental Center has had over 9,500 patient visits in its
first year of operation alone. At capacity, the Children's Dental
Center is expected to accomodate close to 15,000 visits—many
consisting of children from low income families who have never been
to a dentist.
“Kids actually enjoy coming here because the office
is fun and has video games,” says Dr. Scott Jacks DDS and founder of
Children's Dental Group. At the anniversary event, Executive
Director of the California Dental Association Foundation John Roth
congratulated The Health Trust and Children’s Dental Group on their
success, particularly in these tough economic times when access to
affordable, quality care is more important than ever. For
more information on the Children's Dental Center, visit www.healthtrust.org/dentalcenter.

Community Captains Needed for AIDS
Walk
On October
18th, The Health Trust will be participating in the Silicon Valley
AIDS Leadership Center Walk
for AIDS. The five mile walk begins and ends at the
Discovery Meadow in Downtown San Jose and includes a post-walk
celebration and entertainment. As the largest provider of
non-medical services to individuals with HIV/AIDS and their families
in Santa Clara County, The
Health Trust AIDS Services is once again a beneficiary of this
year's event. This year's walk and fundraising efforts are
especially important given the state
budget cuts to HIV/AIDS.

Experts
from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) visit San
Jose

Former CDC Director Dr. Julie
Gerberding calls for water fluoridation at the
Health Trust's Health Equity Summit in February
2009.

Despite its proven oral health benefits, San Jose
remains the largest city in the country without water
fluoridation. Board of Supervisors President Liz Kniss
has made a five year goal to fluoridate all of the water in
Santa Clara County. Now San Jose and Silicon Valley have the
attention of the U.S. Centers of Disease Control (CDC), who consider
water fluoridation “one of the greatest public health
achievements of this century.”
On August 5, the CDC’s lead fluoridation engineer
Kip Duchon joined engineers from Santa Clara Valley Water District
and San Jose Water Company to explain the benefits of fluoride and
steps Silicon Valley needs to take to get this proven public health
benefit. Learn more at www.healthtrust.org/oralhealth.

Health Trust grant helps improve early
childhood nutrition
It's a true story that happens all too
often: a two year old child is admitted to the Valley Medical
Center emergency room with severe anemia. The child’s mother reports
that her daughter drinks large amounts of milk a day, and eats only
ice cream and candies. The child refuses all other food. The child
is overweight. The physician, contacts the Early Childhood Feeding
Collaborative to enroll the parent into the “Five Keys to Raising a
Healthy, Happy Eater” parenting class. As a result of the
class, the child eats more food than before and her iron is
normal.
With support from a Health Trust grant, the
Childhood Feeding Collaborative of the Public Health Department
trains pediatric primary care providers on how talk to parents about
issues of feeding and weight using a best practice approach. The
program also offers a free parenting class on feeding to parents
with children less than six years of age. It partners with
multiple organizations to ensure that parents receive consistent
best practice feeding guidance from their important health care,
childcare and parenting touch-points. “The key to developing healthy
lifelong habits in children begins with supporting strong parent
education; that's why this collaborative is so
important," says Health Trust CEO Frederick
J. Ferrer.
