Facts on Physical Activity for Older Adults

In Santa Clara County, residents 65 or older represent 9.5% of the population according to the 2000 census – about 160,000.

Research has shown that physical activity is the single most powerful health intervention available to improve the health status of older adults.  Keeping physically active is associated with many benefits for healthy aging.

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention physical activity

  • Reduces the risk of developing chronic diseases
  • Lower overall mortality. Benefits were greatest among the most active persons but were also evident for individuals who reported only moderate activity.
  • Lowers risk of coronary heart disease. The cardiac risk of being inactive is comparable to the risk from smoking cigarettes.
  • Lowers risk of colon cancer.
  • Lowers risk of diabetes.
  • Lowers risk of developing high blood pressure. Exercise also lowers blood pressure in individuals who have hypertension.
  • Lowers risk of obesity.
  • Improves mood and relief of symptoms of depression.
  • Improves quality of life and improved functioning.
  • Improves function in persons with arthritis.
  • Lowers risk of falls and injury.

ALL adults no matter the age or ability level can benefit from physical activity.  There is something for everyone:

  • Everyday moderate activity such as brisk walking, raking leaves, or house cleaning
  • Group exercise at senior centers, local Ys, or other community organizations
  • Walking with a friend or neighborhood walk group
  • Sit-down fitness routines
  • Individualized home exercise programs
  • Activities such as dancing, swimming or biking

It’s never too late to become physically active.
