About The Health Trust

“Health care isn't only what takes place in a doctor's office, a clinic or a hospital. We put way too much emphasis on treating disease rather than protecting health in the first place.”

--Former CDC Director, Julie Gerberding, MD

Mission Statement
The mission of The Health Trust is to lead the Silicon Valley community to advance wellness.

Vision and Initiatives
The vision of The Health Trust is to make Silicon Valley the healthiest region in America—a place where every resident can achieve optimal health throughout their lifetime, no matter their background, income, race, ethnicity or age. We believe that health care does not just take place in a doctor’s office and clinic or hospital. For everyone to achieve optimal health, the community itself must become a place that supports the health of all its residents.

With a strong emphasis on prevention, we focus our work through three initiatives: Healthy Living, Healthy Aging and Healthy Communities.

  • The Healthy Living Initiative aims to reduce obesity by creating changes in our environment to increase access to physical activity and healthy food opportunities for all residents.
  • The Healthy Aging Initiative works to ensure that older adults spend more years in good health and engaged as vital members of our community. We do this work by supporting nutrition, physical activity, and social engagement for older adults and by improving systems to help their caregivers.
  • The Healthy Communities Initiative works to reduce health disparities though our programs and policy changes that seek to improve health outcomes for everyone in our community.

In each initiative we have specific strategies to reach our goals. These strategies are accomplished through grantmaking, direct services and programs, partnerships, and policy and advocacy.

History
A charitable foundation, The Health Trust was founded in 1996 from the sale of three local nonprofit hospitals. For more than 15 years the organization has been a catalyst in Silicon Valley for community partnerships that identify health issues and work together to find innovative solutions. In January of 2008, The Health Trust announced a $30 million investment in three initiatives – Healthy Living, Healthy Aging, and Healthy Communities.
